Becoming A Fiction Writer
One girl, one dream … and a whole lot of procrastination

My first short story contest for 2008

So far, so good, I say: it’s still only January and I’ve kicked off my fiction writing year, starting out on point 3 of my resolutions. That’s a whole lot earlier than last year.

This weekend I’ve been participating in the Writers Weekly 24-Hour Short Story Contest for the first time. The concept is quite neat: the topic and word limit are emailed to participants at midday on Saturday (US time – unfortunately that’s 3am Sunday morning here). You then have 24 hours to write a short story and send it back. That’s pressure. And that’s how I get writing done!

At the moment (with 11 hours to go) I’ve got a complete story. I think I like it. I’ve written so few short stories in the past few years that it’s really hard to be sure. The contest guidelines seem to emphasise surprises and interesting endings, so I’ve tried to focus on that. I’ve got a few friends coming round for the evening so I’ll have to put it aside (that’s a good thing), then try to come back fresh late tonight and send it in before the deadline (3am). If only I lived in North America I could have a night to sleep on it, but that’s the price I pay for living Down Under.

$100,000 award for Australian writers

Somehow in all the Christmas rush I missed the news that the new Aussie government has done something nice for writers, by creating the Prime Minister’s Literary Prize for fiction and non-fiction books. Yay!!! The prize is A$100,000, tax-free, which finally sounds like the kind of money a great writer deserves to get.

At the moment the funding is only in place for the next four years – but let’s hope it goes long enough that maybe in 10 or 20 years one of my books can be in the running for the PM’s Prize. Have to think positive!

My official 2008 writing resolutions

As I promised, I’ve had a long, cold drink in the living room (under the air-conditioning, because we had temperatures around 40C) and my goals for 2008 are planned.

I think I get better year by year at making them specific and reasonable enough that I actually get a few done – perhaps not in fiction writing but certainly in other areas, and I was so proud to actually exceed my plans for paid freelance writing. But in my heart I’m a fiction writer, so I don’t want to focus on the paid travel writing at the exclusion of my “big dreams”.

When I wrote my 2008 Resolutions, quite unintentionally I put all the writing goals at the top. I guess that’s a good sign (though maybe not for my weight or my ambition to reorganise the house). Here they are:

  1. Edit my 2007 NaNoWriMo novel and submit it
  2. Plan and write my second novel idea – plan during the year and write in NaNoWriMo 2008
  3. Write more short stories: submit to at least 20 contests
  4. Increase blogging work and freelance travel writing income by 50% (my real goal list has the figure, but that’s a secret!)
  5. Monetise my Ballerina blog. I think. I’m still not sure if that’s where I want to go with this one – but let’s say, at least consider the issue carefully

The fact that I really did write the draft of my first novel next year makes me feel confident that I can do #2; I’m less sure of #1 since I haven’t looked at said draft since November 30. #4 is really a continuation of what’s happened the past two years, and perhaps I should be shooting for more, but I don’t want that to get in the way too much of saving time to write fiction.

Anyway, now they’re out there. You can hound me on these. Ask me every day if you want. If I know you people out there are holding me accountable for doing these things, miracles occur! (I learnt that through completing NaNoWriMo). Bring on 2008!!
