I had started my novel already and I knew leaning on it with all my might for a month was only going to produce something that needed to be completely re-written. Instead, I used the hype of the contest to get myself going and got a big chunk of useful stuff written. Sure, I'm only at 35000 words, but it's worth it knowing that most of it is good material. This is precisely the reason I didn’t enter NaNoWriMo.
