I've only read one series of books with footnotes, Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy, and to be honest I loved it.
Stroud wrote the book from two perspectives, one character (Nathaniel) in third person and the other (Bartimaeus) in third person. Bartimaeus was constantly using footnotes to either explain something a little better, or to make an amusing comment. I thought most of the footnotes were hilarious.
Today I wondered about using footnotes in my own writing and decided to research it a bit. I actually quite liked the idea of footnotes (rather than endnotes to which you have to flick to the back of the book which frankly, drives me insane) as a literary device. But, that is my own opinion :P
This was certainly interesting to read though :)

@ Gill, yes definitely will be at the Writers Festival, and going to the First Tuesday Book Club filming on the Friday! Didn't have enough time (well, enough babysitting) to be a volunteer though, hopefully in a year or two!

@ Ian, glad you enjoyed it - although I'm kind of sorry I helped you procrastinate!

If you want to get more active in your blog I would suggest something like getting a weekly writing prompt to post up here. I am trying to get something going. My favorite website for prompts just stopped posting. If you are interested email me.

I love the website by the way, especially your tagline. We all procrastinate. I am along the same goal as you, trying to become a writer so it was nice digging through the blog.

I'll be chasing down that Tony Parsons' book. I have read a couple of his books and I really enjoyed them. Great to see you back here! I'll be looking forward to reading more about your fiction writing. Are you going to the Perth Writers Festival? I'm put my name on the volunteer list - I hope to get involved this year!

Hi, Amanda,

Love the photo! And congrats on the win. Courses are so motivating to keep us focused. I have 3 different critique groups to keep me motivated--this after deciding not to pursue an MFA. That was a hard decision but I realized what I was mainly looking for was a) structure and b) fellowship...and courses or groups provide that, too. Hope you get a lot out of it.

Congrats on the course! I find those kinds of environments very stimulating. "Environment" being a learning experience/mentality, not necessarily a physical classroom.

As for reading, I am in a "slump" but mostly b/c I'm editing a manuscript for a friend, which is always slower than just reading for fun. I have been feeling restless about my reading lately, in that a bunch of the books I bought/borrowed aren't calling to me to read them next. Usually I ignore that and just pick one and work my way into it, but it's a bit more exciting when there's one you just can't stop thinking about.

That does sound like a good idea Lee-Ann - with the bonus that those books will be quick and easy for me to read (I love finishing books, too!) - and I do have a rather large Enid Blyton collection on the shelf just behind where I'm sitting now ... Thanks!

When I'm in a reading slump, I often pick up a book I enjoyed as a kid and see how it stacks up through older, jaded eyes. ;) I'm currently doing this with the Jedi Apprentice series and finding I still like it, but also noticing a lot of things that could have been done or written better (though being movie tie-ins, the author probably had to churn them out very quickly). I think my next reading slump will see me dissecting Enid Blyton. :P
